So let's start with these shoes. My grandma bought these shoes for me yesterday. I kept them on after buying them at the mall just in case an hour of wear changed my mind.
I didn't take them off for over 24 hours. They did not begin to actually discomfort me until about the 30th hour. These are some awesome shoes.
Now why on earth would anyone wear shoes for that long? You'd think I'd take them off to go to sleep, right? Nah, not on a plane. Yesterday, you see, I began my venture into South America. Buenos Aires, more specifically =D
Photos of greater importance:
These are the last pictures of me (with my family/at all) in America, to date (love you guys!). They'll retain that status until sometime after August 14th, when I return. What am I doing away for so long? Most people reading this already know, but for those who don't, I'm doing research. I landed a sweet quantum chemistry scholarship/internship for 12 weeks. Quiiite excited about the whole thing, of course.
So getting here... The first flight was about 2.5 hours. Pretty decent for a trip from Newark to Miami, I'd say. That went something like...
And ended with a pretty fantastic finish:
The next few hours consisted of pretty legit store-bought sushi, donuts, water, apple juice, and hanging out with Chirag. He got into the same program. About 22 of us did, actually, but he and another friend (Ryan, who's coming the first week of June) are the only ones also going to Buenos Aires. The others are scattered throughout Brazil and France ^_^.
Anyway, I didn't have a window seat on the second flight (the 10 hour one). The best thing I caught was something along the lines of
So yeah. On the upshot for you guys, there isn't much to say about this flight - I slept through about 90% of it. Just goes to show how smooth it was.
SO THEN WE LANDED IN BUENOS AIRES AND I WAS ALL ADSKJHFALSDFJASLDNBVKDFJGKAHDSOFAKSDFOIASDFK!!!!!!! Really, though, it was awesome finally getting here. Kinda like last summer, though whole thing seamed utterly sur/un -real until landing. Baggage took about an hour to get to us (blegh), but va bene, no worries. A woman decided to talk to us and she let us know that San Telmo and ... Pal... Pam... Pelm... Palemo? Something that started with a P and ended in elmo. They are good places to visit, apparently.
Once we got our bags, we looked for Damian (one of my research advisors - the computational one... Ernesto is the experimental one, and yes, I have 2 advisors). He drove us to our apartment and we talked a bit on the way there, all of us getting to know each other better. Mostly we were looking inside the car, what with us talking, but here's some of the outside view we got:
Once we got there, we met Teresa, the daughter of the landlord. She knows enough English to understand it but has an easier time of that than speaking it. Such are foreign languages, eh? She showed us around town a bit and brought her friend Maria, too. Both of them are sweethearts, really. They showed us where to get empenadas, which are treated pretty much exactly like we North Americans treat pizza. Proof positive:
Oh, the apartment...
And here's the outside view (at night):
So here we are! Hopefully I didn't forget any important details. In the meanwhile I gotta run - it's Friday night, so obviously we're off to a party.
Peace!
